Romeo's debut American directorial and production venture, "A Wonderful Day," a short film addressing issues of hunger and homelessness, earned him fourteen international awards. Beyond accolades, the film sparked a movement in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where restaurants and patrons united to feed the homeless. His debut feature film, "Mary," released in December 2020 on OTT platforms, focuses on the struggles and sacrifices of frontline healthcare workers, promoting mask-wearing and social distancing. "Mary" has already received recognition with four international awards from various countries, showcasing Romeo's commitment to addressing crucial societal issues through his cinematic endeavors.
As the founder of the American Film Society, a Non-Profit Organization, Romeo Kattookaran envisions spreading the magic of global cinema in Chicago. The society empowers local and global filmmakers through workshops, conferences, training, and film acquisition camps. To celebrate local talent, the American Film Society organizes the annual 'Chicago International Indie Film Festival' (CIIFF), providing a platform for independent filmmakers to showcase their work to industry veterans. By standing in solidarity with local filmmakers, the film society becomes an integral part of their journey towards success.
